COURSE OF STUDY - DENTAL ASSISTING
GRADE 9 EXPLORATORY – COURSE #DAX 1 CREDIT
Freshman students are introduced to the Dental Assistant profession. They are exposed to clinical and administrative duties of the dental assistant. Dental career opportunities are also explored. Skills include safety, clinical, clerical, and dental laboratory competencies. Students study the identification of teeth and nutrition as it relates to dental health. Grade 9 students study business math as it relates to operating a dental office. This daily curriculum unit helps prepare students for the Grade 10 MCAS Mathematics Assessment.
GRADE 9 SHOP – COURSE #DAXF-16 10 CREDITS
Dental Assisting students begin their Dental Assisting curriculum during the 4th term. Competencies include roles and responsibilities of the dental assistant, introduction to radiology, basic clerical skills and chair side procedures. Students complete the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) 10 Hour Training program.
GRADE 10 SHOP – COURSE #DA2 20 CREDITS
Grade 10 Dental Assisting students will learn both clinical and clerical skills. The clinical aspect includes an introduction to infection control procedures, patient exam preparation and basic operatory management. The clerical component focuses on appointment book scheduling, inventory control and insurance procedures. Students will experience an unpaid supervised externship at Denta Quest Ventures (one day per shop week). Sophomore students also participate in community service initiatives by providing Dental Health Education programs to Northeast preschoolers.
GRADE 10 RELATED – COURSE #DA2R 5 CREDITS
Grade 10 Dental Assisting students study dental charting, oral anatomy, tooth morphology, tooth histology, tooth embryology and nutrition during the related course.
GRADE 11 SHOP – COURSE #DA3 25 CREDITS
Grade 11 Dental Assisting students focus on restorative materials and dental instruments used in general dentistry, as well as procedures and techniques used in today’s offices. Students are introduced to analog and digital radiology. Competencies are developed in exposing, developing, and mounting x-rays. Students work towards certification in American Heart Association CPR/AED and Red Cross First Aid. Grade 11 students experience unpaid supervised externships at Tufts School of Dental Medicine (three days per shop week) and participate in community service initiatives by providing Dental Education Programs to local elementary school children.
GRADE 11 RELATED – COURSE #DA3R 5 CREDITS
Grade 11 students study head and neck anatomy and the theory and safety practices of radiography. Juniors also begin work on their Junior/Senior Project during their Related course.
GRADE 12 SHOP – COURSE #DA4 25 CREDITS
Grade 12 Dental Assisting students concentrate on expanded functions and radiology health and safety in the dental practice. Students are given practical and written lab assessments to prepare them for the national credentialing examinations. Senior year students continue their clinical experience three days per shop week at Tufts School of Dental Medicine or, if eligible, participate in an externship at a community based private practice. The administrative concentration includes exposure to writing office procedure manuals, resume writing, and basic accounting procedures.
GRADE 12 RELATED – COURSE #DA4R 5 CREDITS
Grade 12 students study oral pathology, dental pharmacology and dental office medical emergencies. Students continue work and complete their Junior/Senior Projects.
