Licensure:  Massachusetts requires child care centers, including those in private homes, to be licensed. In order to obtain their license, child care centers require child care workers to pass a background
check and get immunizations. Child care workers need to be trained in first aid and CPR and receive continuous training on topics of health and safety.

Career Advancement:   As child care workers gain experience, some may advance to supervisory or administrative positions in large child care centers or preschools. Often, these positions require additional training, such as a bachelors or masters degree.  Preschool teachers usually work their way up from assistant teacher, to teacher, to lead teacher—who may be responsible for the instruction of several classes—and, finally, to director of the center. Preschool teachers with a bachelors degree frequently are qualified to teach kindergarten through grade 3 as well. Teaching at these higher grades often results in higher pay.
