CTE Shop: Health Assisting

Favorite class: Psychology

One skill/lesson you’ve learned at Northeast that you’ll take with you: One lesson I’ve learned at Northeast is the importance of empathy and advocacy. Through Health Assisting, I’ve learned how to listen with intention, speak up when it matters, and advocate not only for myself but for others as well. This has also taught me the value of hard work and dedication, which have helped me grow both personally and professionally.

A person who has inspired you to be your best: My parents have inspired me to be my best. They have sacrificed so much for me and have always been supportive and encouraging throughout my life. They are some of the most hardworking and driven people I know, and they’ve shown me what dedication looks like while pushing through challenges. Their example motivates me to improve and recognize my potential.

Favorite quote: “The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.” - Mulan

Plans after graduation: After graduation, I will attend UMass Boston, majoring in nursing. I’d like to pursue a career in pediatric nursing and possibly integrate this with social work.

Travel and Adventure Club Explores Cambridge

On Saturday, April 11, the Travel and Adventure Club traveled to Cambridge for a day of exploration and new experiences. Students visited the Harvard Art Museums, where they viewed works by artists such as Picasso, Monet, and Van Gogh. Throughout the day, students also spent time walking through Harvard Yard, taking in the historic campus and its atmosphere.

The trip concluded at Eastern Edge Food Market, where students explored a variety of international food options. Many stepped outside their comfort zones by trying Korean dishes such as bulgogi and bibimbap. The club continues to focus on experiential learning that encourages independence, flexibility, and openness to new experiences.

Drafting & Design Collaborates with Boston Architectural College

Drafting & Design juniors recently completed their Commercial Design Zoo Project, where they designed a zoo centered around a specific animal. Students considered site layout, circulation, ADA accessibility, and overall user experience while developing spaces such as welcome centers, exhibits, and public amenities. Each student created detailed plans, 3D models, and presentation boards to showcase their work. On Friday, April 10, representatives from Boston Architectural College visited to review projects and provide professional feedback. This experience gave students valuable insight into real-world design as they continue to develop their skills.

On Tuesday, May 19, and Wednesday, May 20, Grade 12 students will have a three-hour late start due to MCAS Grade 10 Mathematics testing. A bus run has been added, with buses arriving three hours later than their regular arrival time to accommodate this schedule.

Seniors should arrive at 11:00 a.m. and report directly to their Related classes for attendance with their shop department head. MCAS Grade 10 Mathematics Testing Information

In May, Grade 10 students will take the next round of MCAS testing. Throughout the year, students in the Class of 2028 have engaged in learning activities designed to prepare them for the Mathematics MCAS test. To further support their success, students are strongly encouraged to complete the online practice tests.

In the weeks leading up to the Mathematics MCAS test, Grade 10 math teachers will share information about testing procedures and preparation strategies. Students will be reminded to get eight hours of sleep each night, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school before 7:45 a.m. so they are not rushed and have ample time to get settled. The use of electronic devices, including cell phones, earbuds, and smartwatches, is strictly prohibited during testing. If used, scores will be invalidated. Families are encouraged to discuss these guidelines with students. Most importantly, we wish Grade 10 students the best as they demonstrate their learning.

Spring 2026 MCAS Grade 10 Test Dates (Statewide Testing Schedule)
📌 Mathematics Session 1 - Tuesday, May 19
📌 Mathematics Session 2 - Wednesday, May 20

MCAS Participation & Graduation Requirements
Participation in MCAS testing remains required under state and federal law. Assessment results will be used for school and district accountability purposes, as well as for eligibility for scholarships and recognitions such as the Adams Scholarship, the Stanley Z. Koplik Certificate of Mastery, and the State Seal of Biliteracy.

The law change enacted in December 2024 did not change the requirement for students to participate in MCAS testing. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) will continue to use participation rates, achievement, and growth data as part of its annual district and school accountability system.

While students are no longer required to pass the MCAS to graduate, they must still earn a Competency Determination (CD) and meet all local graduation requirements as outlined in the Program of Studies.

Important Reminders for Grade 10 MCAS Testing:
✅ If your Chromebook is damaged, turn it in to the Tech Office as soon as possible.
✅ Bring your fully charged Chromebook to school each day.
✅ Ask your math teachers questions about MCAS testing.
✅ Review information about test design and development.
Practice online at home to familiarize yourself with the testing format.

For any questions regarding MCAS testing, please contact Joseph O’Brien, test coordinator, at 📧 jobrien@northeastmetrotech.com or 📞(781) 246-0810 ext. 1649.

To guide these conversations and monitor student attendance and grades, students and families should log in to Aspen regularly. Students and parents/guardians have individual accounts with access to different resources, so parents should not share their accounts with their student. Students should click the "Sign in with Google" button to access their accounts, while parents should use their assigned username and password.

For support using and navigating Aspen, take a moment to review the Aspen Parent Portal Information document and video, which can also be found under the Parents & Students tab on the NEMT website. Families in need of Aspen support should contact us at nex2@northeastmetrotech.com.
